For lesser trouble, one could go to the nearest wildlife refuge with a place where birds can stop and be observed for a few hours. Not only will it save money, it will also save you from trouble and disappointment.

It can also be helpful to know what species to expect in a particular area. Read about birds and bird species to know a few things about particular specie.
